Newsletter of 4 December 2004:
The groups studying the chromosomes and DNA of Swamp Clivia have just published their paper naming it as a new species, Clivia robusta:
Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, vol 146, pp 369-374 "A NEW SPECIES OF CLIVIA. A new species of Clivia (Amaryllidaceae) endemic to the Pondoland Centre of Endemism, South Africa" by B. G. MURRAY, Y. RAN, P. J. DE LANGE, K. R. W. HAMMETT, J. T. TRUTER and Z. H. SWANEVELDER
The Swamp Clivia has been around a very long time, but was confused with Clivia gardenii until recently. It was also referred to as the Robust Gardenii, hence the new botanical name.
As you may already know, there was a recent discovery of a brand new species of Clivia in the Western Cape area of South Africa, living on the walls of canyons in the desert -- Clivia mirabilis.
I was only allowed to order 5 of the new seedlings being offered, so I cannot get any for anyone else.
There are two more "candidates" for possible new species: a large, vigorous miniata-like species from Kenya, and a different plant from eastern South Africa that some informally refer to as "Maxima". The latter looks like a stable hybrid between robusta and nobilis. Seeds of "Maxima" were offered by us on behalf of Fred van Niekerk this past autumn. I hope we will have them for sale again next season.
Newsletter of 10 December 2004:
There have recently been questions in the [clivia-enthusiast] e-mail group about diseases in Clivia. This has motivated me to add a page to the CliviaNet discussion and to update the information pages in my commercial web site.
See links from: http://www.shieldsgardens.com/info/CliviaInfo.html
as well as CliviaNet at http://www.clivianet.org/ > Cultivation > Diseases of Clivia
I would also like to share with you the progress on our new Clivia House. They have started putting the plastic roofing in place at last! I'll be posting pictures and a play-by-play on the new greenhouse at: http://www.shieldsgardens.com/Clivia/cliviahouse.html Just follow the "Next" buttons at the bottoms of the pages.
