We need a defined vocabulary for describing our plants, and this particular page deals with the names we can use for describing various leaf widths and lengths. This pertains mainly to Clivia miniata and its hybrids.

The following list is the revision proposed on 19 February 2003 by Connie and James Abel:

• Extra Narrow (EN) -- < 25 mm
• Narrow Leaf (N) -- 25 - 50 mm wide
• Semi Briad Leaf (SB) -- 51 - 75 mm wide
• Broad Leaf (B) -- 75 - 100 mm wide
• Very Broad Leaf (VB) -- 101 - 125 mm
• Extra Broad Leaf (EB) -- 126 - 150 mm
• Ultra Broad Leaf (UB) -- > 150 mm wide

These definitions are preliminary. A group of us worked on them in the on-line Clivia Chat session (Marc Hamel, Pen Henry, Mike Morri, Jim Shields, & Tom Wells) and merged these with those of the South African group (Mr. Ammie Grobler and friends).

Leaf Length

The Northern Clivia Club in Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, have been considering classifications for leaf length in Clivia as well. Here are their suggestions:

• Miniature -- < 200 mm long
• Short -- 201 - 350 mm
• Medium -- 351 - 600 mm
• Long -- > 600 mm long
