Jim Shields' Greenhouse Benches

Construction of sturdy plant benches or tables for greenhouse, shade house, or potting shed. The material is redwood: 2 X 4 stock, 1 X 4 stock, and sides of 1 X 6 stock.

Deck of greenhouse bench under construction The benches used here are made here from redwood. The intent is to have strong, sturdy benches that will bear heavy loads of potted plants or of working horticulturists. These also have a long useful life, running to 20 years or longer.
Underside of deck of greenhouse bench under construction The first component of the bench to be constructed is the deck. A frame of 2 X 4 redwood lumber is built. The width of this frame is 28 inches, but the length can be anything up to about 9 feet. The framework is decked with 1 X 4 redwood lumber cut to 28 inches length and spaced flush at each end but 1/2 inch apart along the deck.
