Winter Flowers in the greenhouse

Flowers blooming in the greenhouses in late winter.

Scadoxus puniceus Scadoxus puniceus is native to South Africa. This is the first bloom on the first seedlings of this species in my greenhouse. This species is found in the Drakensberg and on the High Veld, where it blooms in Spring, before or just as the leaves are emerging. [Discussion of the genus Scadoxus]
Hippeastrum papilio Hippeastrum papilio, the "butterfly amaryllis," is native to Brazil. This is the first bloom on a seedling from seed distributed in 1998 by the I.B.S. BX.
Hippeastrum leopoldii hybrid #274 This bulb was purchased as "aulicum X self" but it clearly is not that. It looks like it might have some Hippeastrum neopardinum in it.
